Cat Skiing in Georgia

What is Cat Skiing?

Cat skiing is an exhilarating backcountry skiing experience using snowcats, which are large tracked vehicles, to transport skiers and snowboarders to pristine, untracked powder. Unlike traditional resort skiing, cat skiing takes you beyond groomed runs into wild terrain, offering untouched snow and spectacular mountain landscapes.

Each snowcat carries 10–12 guests plus guides, providing a personalized experience. Professional guides ensure safety while leading groups to the best powder stashes. Cat skiing in Georgia allows skiers of various skill levels to safely explore terrain that would otherwise require mountaineering skills and avalanche knowledge.

Why Go Cat Skiing in Georgia?

Reliable Snowfall in the Caucasus

Georgia’s backcountry sees consistent, deep snowfall thanks to moisture-laden air from the Black Sea hitting the Caucasus Mountains. This creates stable powder conditions ideal for freeriding. Many people looking to go Cat Skiing in Europe are coming to Georgia because of its consistent snowfall.

Huge Terrain With No Lift Infrastructure

Unlike crowded resorts, Georgia’s vast backcountry terrain has no lift lines and way more interesing freeride options. Skiers can explore ridgelines, bowls, and forested areas freely, making every run unique.

Affordable Cat Skiing in Europe

Luxury accommodation, professional guides, and deep powder cost a fraction of what you’d pay for Cat Skiing in the Alps or Cat Skiing in America. Georgia provides premium freeride experiences at unmatched value, it is one of the more affordable places to go Cat Sking in Europe.

Fewer Restrictions Than the Alps

Georgia’s freeride zones have fewer regulatory constraints, giving skiers more flexibility while still benefiting from expert local guides and safety measures.

Best Cat Skiing In Georgia

Cat Skiing in Goderdzi // Georgia's Premium Cat Skiing Destination

Goderdzi is Georgia’s standout cat skiing area, combining deep, reliable snowfall, low crowd pressure, and safe, playful terrain suitable for mixed-ability groups. Thanks to its proximity to the Black Sea, snow stacks up here at astonishing levels.

What truly sets Goderdzi apart is comfort. Unlike other Georgian cat skiing zones, Goderdzi has premium mountain accommodation with spa facilities, making it the most refined cat skiing experience in the country. Terrain is varied without being overly aggressive, avalanche exposure is lower than steeper regions, and runs stay untracked for far longer due to limited operations and the smaller group sizes of our trips.

For skiers seeking deep powder without chaos, risk, or compromise, Goderdzi is the clear choice.

Cat skiing in Bakhmaro // Steeper, Rustic But More Crowded

Bakhmaro is Georgia’s most established cat skiing region and receives impressive snowfall similar to Goderdzi. However, its popularity comes at a cost. With many snowcat operations running simultaneously, terrain becomes tracked quickly, forcing operators to travel farther and farther to find untouched snow.

The terrain in Bakhmaro is steeper and more avalanche-prone, making it better suited to strong, experienced skiers. Accommodation is basic and rustic, lacking anything close to luxury or spa-level comfort.

Bakhmaro appeals to purists who prioritize steep lines over comfort, but it offers a less controlled and less refined experience compared to Goderdzi.

Cat Skiing in Svaneti // Big Mountains, Less Snow, Higher Commitment

Svaneti is famous for dramatic alpine scenery and serious terrain, but it receives significantly less snowfall than the Black Sea–facing regions of Goderdzi and Bakhmaro. Lines are steeper, consequences are higher, and powder can be less inconsistent.

This region is best suited to very experienced backcountry skiers who are comfortable managing risk and variable conditions. Travel times are long, infrastructure is limited, and the overall experience is more expedition-style than powder-focused.

For most skiers, Svaneti is visually impressive, but not the best choice for consistent cat skiing.

Cat Skiing in Gudauri

Gudauri is Georgia’s main ski resort and a popular freeride base, but there is currently no cat skiing in Gudauri. While rumors occasionally circulate about future snowcat access, nothing exists at this time.

For now, Gudauri remains a lift-accessed freeride destination rather than a cat skiing zone.

When is the best time to Go Cat Skiing in Georgia?

The cat skiing season in Georgia runs from mid-January through mid-March. This is when the snowpack is deepest, most stable, and the weather provides the best mix of snowfall and visibility.

  • January: Stormy powder days, deep snow

  • February: Optimal mix of snow and sun

  • March: Longer days, stable snow, occasional bluebird skies

Cat Skiing vs Heli Skiing in Georgia

  • Accessibility & Weather Dependence: Cat skiing can operate when helicopters cannot.

  • Cost Effectiveness: 40–60% cheaper than heli skiing for similar terrain.

  • Group Dynamics: Smaller, intimate groups allow guides to focus on safety and instruction.

  • Environmental Impact: Snowcats are quieter, consume less fuel, and minimize wildlife disturbance.

  • Terrain Access: Snowcats reach a wide variety of slopes and aspects without risking safety.

What to Expect on a Georgia Cat Skiing Trip

Your adventure starts in Tbilisi, then continues to a remote alpine hotel tucked deep in the Lesser Caucasus. Each day begins with a hearty breakfast, followed by loading into the snowcat to access untouched terrain. Spend the day exploring ridgelines, forests, and open bowls far from lift lines.

Cultural experiences enhance the trip: remote villages, traditional cuisine, warm local hosts, and memorable surprises make your journey as enriching off the slopes as it is on the snow.

We were blessed with an abundant amount of snow and they provided the expertise needed to navigate all of the untouched terrain. They were always in constant communication with us and we always felt safe throughout the duration of our trip. I would love to return do another trip with vagabond in the future. I can't rave enough about our experience with Vagabond Adventures. We booked a week-long cat-skiing trip to Goderdzi and they went above and beyond. Jamison and Buta made sure our group was taken care of on and off the snow. When some of us had travel delays due to flight cancellations, they altered our transfer without a hitch. When the weather forced us to have a couple down days, they made sure we had fun things to do like building a jump or a surprise snow igloo to celebrate a birthday in the group. They have an intimate knowledge of the area and people in Goderdzi so it really felt like we were getting a true local experience. On the snow, they are professional and ensured our group was safe while maximizing fun, but what really sets Vagabond apart from other guiding services is the personal connection they make with the group. By the end of the week, Jamison and Buta felt more like friends rather than hired professionals and I hope to be able to get out with them again in the future. 🤘

Coming from the US as an experienced skier, but having limited knowledge of skiing in Georgia, Vagabond made our experience better than ever expected. From professionalism and quality guiding during ski days, to assisting with language barriers and giving recommendations when ordering food etc., the team at Vagabond went above and beyond. Our group felt safe and were able to maximize each of our days cat skiing in Goderdzi. Would highly recommend using Vagabond to plan your Georgian ski adventure!!

We had this great trip to Goderdzi organized by Vagabond Adventures. Taylor made sure we were well taken care of. The communication was always prompt. We missed our connection flight getting to Georgia and it delayed us 24 hours; Taylor was able to successfully reorganize our trip and we were still able to enjoy everything as scheduled. We would highly recommend Vagabond Adventures for your future travel.

One of, if not the best ski experiences I have ever had. Taylor and one of his guides Luka were incredible and took us to some unforgettable terrain. The snow was deep and fresh powder lines were to be had basically everywhere they took us. Even our final run back to where we were staying was epic. I’d highly recommend using Vagabond Adventures for your next trip to Georgia!!
